As many locals, and part timers are aware, this time of year on Hilton Head is truly unique. The weather is still warm, if not downright hot, but, hey, that's why we came here anyway right?...I digress, the weather is great, the traffic is mostly better, the beach is more wide open, and the prospect of cooler days is not too far off.
Even better, for many, is the congruence of this more relaxing time on Hilton Head with the beginning of football season. There is no question as to the growing popularity of football, college and pro, in this country. This island has always offered a unique insight into this phenomenon. As a 16 year resident of Hilton Head it is a unique place to be during football season. As a local business owner / operator it makes for some unique, if not awkward, moments. How so?
There is no universal fan base here. On any given day I can see a dozen different teams represented in my store alone. I try to stay away from broadcasting my allegiances. I am interested in most, if not all sports. I have watched college football since I can remember. I want my customers to enjoy their game and hopefully our pizza. That's it. However, during football season I can hardly keep up with which game is "the big game"! I want to remain as impartial and unbiased as possible. I listen to sports radio and read quite a bit about sports so I can be somewhat knowledgeable about most teams, headlines, etc. Problem is, "fans" are not impartial. So their idea of "the big game", "the bad call", or "the greatest ever" will most likely be completely different. It is an interesting tightrope to walk when the parade of fans through our doors varies so much. Don't get me wrong, it is way more interesting than if we were all rooting for the same team each week. And all the while we get to enjoy America's past time on a tiny little island many people outside of Ohio have never heard of. The gift of our precious off season just keeps on giving!
Have a great week.
